and watch 2 seasons of HIMYM in 2 weeks' time.
My German students and my European friends are obsessed with HIMYM (along with Two and a Half Men - random, right?). Those two shows are all I hear about here. My friend gave me seasons 1-3 of HIMYM so I decided to watch an episode....../the entire first & second seasons.
I. am. addicted. I've discussed this with my American friends here and the thing is - to us, this show isn't that funny. In an age where the Michael Scotts and David Brents of the TV world have re-defined humor, the HIMYM dialogue is pretty flat and a little bit too 90s for my taste (think: Friends/laugh track). It's not really dry at all and a lot of the lines are so predictable and out-dated (and don't even get me started on the wardrobe choices, good gosh). So I'm not sure why I love it. But I love it. I love the characters (Marshall being my favorite - duh) and I am already dreading running out of seasons. I watch one every night before I go to bed and I laugh and laugh and laugh...by myself.

Without her, none of this would have been possible.

Please don't put Michael Scott and David Brent in the same sentence. David Brent redefined the role of humor. Michael Scott is just a cheap ripoff (to no fault of Steve Carell).

I have been wanting to start watching HIMYM, but I'm terrified of what Megan described- I cannot not watch every single episode all at once. I'm thoroughly impressed by your ability to ration them out!
This is one of my favorite shows to watch. I usually catch it while I'm at the gym, plugged into a treadmill. I tend to get caught up laughing out loud and then get the "crazy eyes" from fellow gym goers.

HIMTYM rules! I watched the latest episode today and cried, haha. I quote from the show sometimes but it's sad when it's around friends who don't watch it and don't get it.

I started watching it because everyone here references it all the time! I love that guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall - he's hysterical!
I catch this show on from time to time and never fall in love with it...probably because I don't know the characters. You did describe perfectly all the reasons not to love it. Poor show.

I love that show too! But your right, it isn't all that funny, especially when there are so many clever comedies around now. BUT that doesn't stop me from watching it over and over and over again.

I was so confused, I was like what is HIMYM but I get it now. I dont watch it but I hear it's funny. I do watch Two and a Half men. That is so funny.

I just watched two episodes on German TV (i know, i know...dubbing sucks)....and even so, I liked it! :)))
I love that show far all he reasons you listed, bad shows, high fiveing *zing* one liners! And Marshall.. ohhh who doesnt want a Marshall?
I'm really not a huge sitcom fan, bukt I do like this one. My best friends are OBSESSED with it.
