Here in Bavaria, donuts are not donuts - they are Krapfen (in northern Germany, they are known as Berliner....sometimes Pfannkuchen). They're typically filled with apricot marmalade (or sometimes rose marmalade, which I find disgusting!). During what I call "Krapfen season" (aka the 4 weeks of Fasching), Bavarian bakeries produce Krapfen by the masses; adding chocolate filled (like the ones seen in the photo!), liquor filled (ew, ew, ew) and pudding filled (sort of ew) to the mix. Every time I walked into a bakery during 2011's Fasching (which is basically the last 2 weeks of February and first 2 weeks of March - it varies from year to year), I somehow ended up walking out with a Krapfen in hand.
One morning during Krapfen season (so, about a month ago), I was supposed to meet my friend Emily at the train station but ended up running late. I texted her my apologies but decided that buying her (and myself) a Krapfen seemed to be a more failproof method of earning her forgiveness. We ate our Krapfen on the train and then, after reaching our destination (a total of 12-15 minutes later), we passed by yet another Krapfen bakery......and may or may not have bought a couple more.
This is just one small excerpt from the volumes of Krapfen stories I managed to accumulate during those 4 glorious weeks of Fasching, in which I said, "Krapfen season is really working out for me." on a daily basis.
I miss Krapfen season already.
Krapfen, sigh! I have only spent two weeks in Germany but it was the absolute best! I always say that if i got to travel to Europe I would just want to go back to Germany. So I'm Uber Jealous you get to live there!
Haha! I saw those huge doughnuts when we were in Germany but I didn't break down and buy one because they would probably become a daily occurrence! I didn't know that they were filled with rose and alcohol!
Oh, yum! I wish we had something like that here! But I guess it's sort of always donut season in the US... : )
xo,
Sarah
I would really like to be able to wrap my mind around liquor filled, can that maybe be the next excerpt?
Those look and sound so much more delicious than doughnuts!
Those doughnuts look amazing! I would definitely go for the chocolate one. I'm so happy I stumbled on your blog! You are one hilarious writer and I love that I can now live my European wanderlust through your adventures. I'm now a happy follower ;)
xo, Abby
Jenni, How did you move? I know that's a silly question, but what prompted you to move? Did you have a job lined up? Do you have family there? I'm considering moving to Europe when I graduate from college and I'd be really grateful for any words of wisdom or explanations. Just... comment back? or email me! lovlylittlelady@gmail.com
i want donuts SOOO bad now.
yum!! sometimes husband and I like to go on "dates" to krispy kreme or dunkin doughnuts :)
P.S I studied abroad for a semester and am dying to live abroad again. But I have no idea about how to go about moving and finding a job abroad... especially since my husband would be coming too. :) How did you do it? Sorry I know this is random. xoxo

I love it. Ps yes mumford and sons.. freaking a sexy group of men
Mmmm I need a krapfen. I just read another post on nutella brownies, now this. I think the universe is conspiring against my "healthy eating" plans :)
Happy Tuesday! Have another krapfen for me ;)
we have beignets in france - so not as cool! the fillings sound crazy !! i went to germany last week and they served SALAMI for breakfast? I guess the donuts make up for that?
That sounds delicious! And I love that the donuts have a season, awesome.
I'm not the biggest donut fan but these look yummy!
I like this krapfen season business. I think having a season for eating donuts is a great idea - not just a national donut day.
Thanks for your comment on my blog, by the way!
Your mojito in Poland sounded incredible.
Oh, I like the plain ones too! They had them here also with white chocolate, eggnog filling (ew indeed), Black forest cake filling, Tiramisu filling (what the..?) you name it....!!!! Krapfen all the way.
Those look delicious! I don't think I would like the filling very much, but I'm up for trying them out! Every single kind. Haha.
Donuts have always comforted you!!
