a trip to stuttgart, otherwise known as “sleep camp”

{stuttgart, Germane}

I’d never been to Stuttgart before but my friend Heather, who lives there with her husband, had invited me several times and we eventually worked out a time for me to visit.  The initial plan: me spending 1 night in Stuttgart.  What ended up happening: me spending 1 week in Stuttgart.
As soon as Heather found out I had the week off of work, she said, “Excuse me?  Why didn’t you tell me that?  We can have so much fun this week!”.  She took a day off of work herself just to show me around the city (and clearly, based on the single photo, above, I have so much photographic evidence of that tour).

She also took me to the Army base, where she and her husband work, so that I could pick out some American treats from the American grocery store.  I almost had a heart attack when we walked into the store and she said, “Fill up the shopping cart with anything you want; I’m buying”.  I limited myself to just “a few” items:  Fruity Pebbles, brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tarts, Jiffy cornbread, Quaker rice cakes (ranch flavored), Chex Mix, 1 Totino’s Pizza and Funfetti cupcake mix (with frosting).  Following that little shopping spree, she took me to Pop Eye’s (on base) so I could eat 3 biscuits with honey.  Because let me tell you…coming from where I come from, it is pretty darn rough living on a continent where “biscuit” means “stale pseudo-cookie”.  Eating a warm, doughy, flaky, floury, buttery biscuit covered in honey was downright heavenly (even if it did come from Pop Eyes…).

We jokingly referred to my stay in Stuttgart as “sleep camp” because I felt as though I’d been sent to some type of sleep rehabilitation center.  All I did there was sleep.  And eat.  And watch movies.  It was glorious.  Every day, Heather and Chris would go to work and I’d sleep in, eat 2 bowls of Fruity Pebbles for breakfast (I finished the entire box before the week was over and no, neither Heather nor Chris ate so much as a pebble) while watching Valentine’s Day (why on earth did anyone find it acceptable to cast Taylor Swift in a major motion picture?), The Social Network (seen it before, of course, but had to watch it again because ohmygosh is Aaron Sorkin a genius), The Town (this actually might be one of my favorite movies ever), The Last Song (no, as a matter of fact I don’t know what possessed me to watch this, but thank you for asking) and The Reader (I didn’t love it but didn’t hate it).

Remarkably, I did not leave ‘sleep camp’ 10 lbs heavier than when I arrived.  I’m still trying to figure that one out.

The only other memorable event that occurred was Heather’s husband issuing her a lifetime lipstick ban.  Prior to my arrival, she’d ask me to “bring all [my] lipsticks”.  My lipstick collection consists of precisely 4 colors but I brought them anyway and Heather sampled them all.

DSC01103 {had i known i was staying in stuttgart longer than 1 night, i would’ve packed a variety of clothes.   …and this is why i’m wearing a green zip-up hoodie in just about every photo from my trip.}

{steve, a friend of heather’s – told her he could not have a serious conversation with her unless she removed the lipstick…steve is not a fan of lipstick, noted.}

more photos featuring lipstick and hoodies to come....!

my husband hates brite lipstick. He doesn't mind lighter or more natural shades, but the moment you try and put something a little brighter on there he starts making faces. I have been slowly ramping up the color lately, and he seems to notice less and less, that might be the secret...

My ex had a very strong stance against bright red lipstick. Naturally, after we broke up, I wore it to the first wedding I went to and found his views were not universal.

Isn't it amazing how brown-sugar-cinnamon poptarts are good cold AND hot? I used to pack them for snowboarding and eat them all day (wow, that's actually kind of sad).

My husband would laugh so hard if I tried to wear that. You, on the other hand, can pull it off awesomely. It looks so good with your dark hair and eye color!

ludicrous! Lipstick is amazing and in my opinion the brighter the better!
and you both look fabulous with it on. :)

I think you both are wearing beautiful shades of lipstick. I don't understand the thing these guys seem to have against lipstick either. It must be just a guy thing?

ahhhh i wish i could pull off red lips like you do! what brand do you use?!

as terrible as i've heard it is, i secretly want to watch "valentine's day." just to see how truly bad it is. also, have you heard they're making "new year's eve"? from the looks of the cast it promises to be as equally terrible as "valentine's day." yaaay.

I get so happy for you when you're able to have American treats! Living without biscuits would be like living without happiness. I shudder at the thought.
Also, my boyfriend HATES lipstick/lipgloss. It makes me sad because I love my red lipstick so. It certainly doesn't stop me from wearing it, but his look of disdain is very evident. Piotr is a gem!

@Alex, I will tell him you said so! ....Okay, I told him and his response is, "American guys are just weird". ...which may be true, because I've found that my Euro guy friends here love it.

All I want to do now is wear red lipstick in front of Eric and see what he says.

I need to make Aaron a little more European. I try to do so a little each day. For example, yesterday he was shoe shopping and I pointed out a VERY fashionable pair of shoes that I could totally picture a European guy wearing. They were sexy. And what does he say? "OH GOOD GOD, NOT IN A MILLION YEARS!!!" Fail.

Oh I love Stuttgart. Now I want to go there again asap. One day I drove there to just meet a friend at Starbucks and than drove back home - it is a 1 1/2 to 2 hours drive, depending in traffic. Does that make me weird?

hm, I dunno. My boyfriend likes when I wear lipstick. I think the weird one here might be the husband ;)

I have only been in Germany two days, but after a trip food shopping tonight, I am DYING over all of your American goodies (seriously everything you listed is a guilty pleasure..funfetti, tontino's, fruity pebbles, we're destined to be friends!)

I LOVE my red and pink lipsticks, but I don't think any of muh boyfriends ever have. I have gotten everything from, "You look... nice..." to, "Sarah. I hate your lipstick." I need a Piotr!

My boyfriend prefers me not wearing ANY makeup and especially lipstick. I don't know what it is but he likes the au-natural look.

I love The Town, by the way. Such a good movie. Hated the other 2. And there's nothing like being able to load up on American treats at a base!

Thank you for all the comment love! You're awesome!!
