i go to work in the dark

Monday, December 5, 2011

I’ve never been an early riser.  Ever.  Ever, ever, ever.  And I seriously doubt there will ever be a time in my life in which I enjoy waking up earlier than 8:30.  And by 8:30, I mean 9:45.

Since my school is located a bit outside of Dresden, I have to commute a half an hour each day to and from school.  This means waking up at (brace yourselves) 5:30 in order to shower and dress and be out the door by 6:30 so that I can catch my train.  While on the train, I listen to my iPod, read a book, make last-minute adjustments to my lesson plans – all while trying desperately not to fall asleep (and sometimes to no avail…. oops).  When I get off the train, I walk to school from the train station (10 minutes-or-so on foot) and head straight to the teacher’s lounge where I ready my materials for the day.

[Fun fact:  nearly every morning, my German colleagues offer me coffee and never fail to shake their heads in collective bewilderment when I tell them, no thanks – I don’t drink coffee*.]

And while each morning on the train, I think I resentful thoughts about my working hours, wishing that I started work at a later time and thinking, “If only I could be in bed right now” or “Why can’t it be a snow day?”, it feels pretty good to finish work each day no later than one-something.
And the best part  of having a job which requires of you showing up to work at these ungodly hours of the morning?  The rest of the day is yours for the taking!  And by taking, I mean sleeping.

*But in related news, have you ever tried a hazelnut steamer?  They;re delicious!

I have to get up around the same time, I have gotten so used to it I can't sleep in - not sure if I prefer it or not! x

"And by 8:30 I mean 9:45." I laughed way too loud at this. We are sisters in sleep patterns. I sleep in like a boss.

Blahaha, I know exactly what you mean. I have to get up around 5:30 or 6 every morning in order to get ready for school and eat breakfast and finish any last minute homework junk and catch the bus by 6:50 or 7. Then I try to fall asleep on the loud, smelly bus, as my bus ride is about one and half hours...and right as I'm about to fall asleep some kid runs up the aisle, stops at my seat and yells, "Baaahhh!" in my face and I wake up. Why?!?!!?

Anyway, I think we're both in beautiful agreement that mornings are silly and neither of us are ever going to have a good relationship with them. Ever.

5:30 am does not exist in my world. I have to be at work at 8, and get up at 7. That's as early as I'll go!

Omg 5:30. Kill me now. I think I WENT TO SLEEP at 4:30 a few days ago! If you can, I'd try switching to night showers. They are real time savers for me. (i.e. I can usually get ready in 5 minutes (I'd rather sleep that be cute))

Oh my I can seriously relate to you. I wake up at 5:15 every morning in order to make it to work on time. And I hate hate hate mornings. My natural wake up time is around 10 am. My commute to work is an hour and fifteen minutes each way.

hazelnut steamer?! that sounds incredible. i love hazelnut hot chocolate. let's face it, hazelnut is delicious. but waking up that early is not.

@celeste, i normally take night showers BUT having no hairdryer complicates things (as it takes my hair, like, 5 years to dry & i hate sleeping on it wet). i guess the simple solution would just be to buy a hair dryer. :)

Girl. That is one early wake up call!! I couldn't do it! I don't drink coffee either. I have a cup (or three) of caffeinated tea each morning and it does the trick (:

I'm not a morning person either and like you, travel for an hour each way to work. Not nice!

oh i am so impressed that you are surviving in this world without coffee! i feel like it's totally a morning person's world. maybe germany isn't? but i'm pretty sure america is for the morning people. and morning people think aaaall people should be morning people and that is why my caffeine intake is so extreme. but even still, my brain runs on one cell until 11am. sorry, morning people. doesn't matter what time my eyes open. so, way to go, you!! i'm maj impressed.

I can't believe you. Why are you torturing yourself like this? I've been drinking coffee since I was like four years old and I can't imagine life without it.

Wow that is early! Thankfully despite my 40-50min train ride I am yet to fall asleep. Though one day I nearly did and it was so hard to not fall over!

oh ouch! that is so early! i guess my 815am classes don't sound so bad in comparison.
ps. definitely empathize with the 'you don't drink coffee...what??' reaction. i'm a tea drinker in a coffee-crazy country and it will never cease to amuse my classmates/relatives.

I'm with you girl :) And I know about the commuting... I live in Ansbach and my boyfriend wants me to find a job in Nurnberg... no thank you no thank you no thank you... I'd have to wake up far farrrr to early.
But I do love coffee so that helps.
And I also LOVE your hair... and your bangs! They're beautiful!

I would die! When people tell me that they actually wake up that early to go to gym, I just look at them like they are craaazy!

But your case is different. Luckily, I only live about 6 km from work, so I can sleep till 7 each morning...still not late enough though! Late is like getting up at eight for me.

I don't drink coffee either. Imagine peoples surprise when I say 'let's go on a coffee date!' and we get there and I order hot chocolate :)

Great photo of you girl :)

I gave up all caffiene b/c of migraines. I missed it so in the beginning, but now I actually feel better. I love the smell though. And I miss hot drinks!
