the happiest place on earth

No, in my mind, this title does not belong to Disney Land or Disney World, but rather Tesco- the Polish grocery store. And yes, I realize it’s not “Polish”, but I’ve only been to Tesco in Poland, so…to me, it’s Polish.

For some reason, grocery shopping is one of my favorite hobbies (Omg, did I just refer to grocery shopping as a hobby?). I think it’s because I love shopping, I love cooking and I love eating…I also love taking the items out of the cart and setting them on the counter to be scanned.  This was my "job" as a child and I still take that job very seriously.

One of my favorite things about Tesco (in Poland, at least) is how many flavors of ketchup you can buy, considering how ketchup is served with EVERY meal here.   At Tesco, when Piotr discovered they stopped making “Kepab ketchup”, the following words came out of his mouth and no, I am not kidding: “Sucks my life!!!....wait, SML?...no, what is it….oh, right….FML!”

DSC00359This “American-brownie-flavored-milk” was on sale for half price. Apparently, no one had had wanted to buy this stuff; I can’t imagine why.

Anyhow, between the Pringles, the ketchup, the brownie milk, and the toiletries that are SO much cheaper here than in Germany, Tesco has become "the happiest place on earth" for me.  Or rather, the happiest place in Poland.

I do love a trip to Tesco myself! In the UK we also have Waitrose. A trip to Waitrose is like Christmas for me. It's the best ever!

hahahahaha this is hilarious! I've never been to Tesco but I know what you mean.... I love grocery shopping. My ex boyfriend would think I was crazy because he'd text me asking me what I was doing and I'd say "grocery shopping!!!!!" and he couldn't understand why I was having fun. Oh well. I love it!

You look so pretty in that picture with the milk. BTW - maybe the brownie flavored milk was half price because it was expired!!! I rememeber when you wouldn't let me put the groceries on the conveyor belt. And when you cried when they changed the name of our grocery store to Jewel Osco!!! So yes you've always loved grocery stores. You also had to organize everything by the check out so it looked neat!! (Wonder why you didn't do that in your room?)

Can you believe I've yet to go to a Polish Tesco? I went in London all the time and even would get a bunch of Polish food there. Pretty much "Biedronka" rules my grandparent's town so no Tesco (yet!).
What is with Polish people and ketchup?! This must have skipped over my parents and one of my brothers. My oldest brother's (the one who has been in Poland the longest, figures) favorite food (well, just about) = white bread + yellow cheese + ketchup. My cousins put ketchup on just about everything (I was really surprised when they put it on Ruske pierogi).

Oh, and I don't know what Piotr is talking about! It's like a sin or something not to have sweets in a Polish household at all times. When I went to visit my grandma a few years ago, she made three cakes in one week: one for my cousins birthday, one for my grandpa's birthday (not the same day... or week for that matter), and one for my arrival.
My uncle decided to stop eating sweets because it was between sweets or alcohol... easy choice for a Polish man there, although we all think he's crazy for giving up cakes!!

Ah, sorry this is so long!

eva, i just read your comment out loud to piotr and upon hearing the part about your brother loving the cheese+bread+ketchup combo, he yelled, "i know, right?! best snack ever."

and WHY am i surrounded by all the sweets-hating poles? i had a feeling they were crazy....

oh and the sweets vs. alcohol dilemma does not surprise me at ALL.

Grocery stores in Poland are also one of my favourite places. The amount of food to choose from is PHENOMENAL!! And everything looks sooo appetising (this might sound strange: but especially the deli/meat counter).

P.S. Thanks for your sweet comment :)

I'm glad you said something because I was starting to think maybe I was sounding like the Polish, but not really Polish blog stalker, ha! What Piotr said to my brother's sandwich preference made me laugh out loud. Biedronka is pretty much like a small warehouse full of people. It only showed up a couple years ago (in my grandparent's town), but it seems like the go-to-place. The people in town either hate it or love it. I guess it's like the Polish Wal-Mart. Enjoy your pierogi! : )
