When Taylor asked me what I wanted to do in Mannheim, I told her one thing:
shop at the commissary.
(See this post for more info.)
Well, she took me to the commissary and I’m too embarrassed to describe what took place inside. I’ll let the following photos speak for themselves. I will say, though, that I was meeting my friend Erin at the train station on my way home and had to warn her via text message, “When you see me, I will be carrying my body weight in grocery bags. Don’t be alarmed.” How’s that for a visual?
You can't get this kind of crap (that's kind of the only word for it) in German supermarkets, people.
Now, the most noteworthy of disclaimers ever to be issued:
1 - not all of these groceries are for me (many of them were involved in the making of valentine's treat bags!) & 2 - I am proud to say the groceries I did buy for me have been rationed to last me the next 6 months…so that my body does not implode from transfats. Oh, and that US Weekly? Yeah, I couldn’t care less if Sandra and Ryan are “so on!” – that is tabloid trash in English and it was snapped up in a heartbeat the very moment I spotted in the check-out line.

Oh, and the most important purchase of all (so important it warrants its own, separate photo): chocolate chip cookie dough, which, I have no shame in admitting, was not included in the rationing process and was consequently consumed within a 72 hour period.
And then Erin and I made cookies (quite a few)
and watched the Cosby Show with huge glasses of milk.
Kind of an ideal night, if you ask me.

My stomach is literally turning for that Jiffy and the PB Cups!!! I want to dip the cups in Jiffy and eat them alll!! aaaah I'm going to go into a food comatose when I go back to Massachusetts! Lucky girl, ENJOY IT!!
I am jealous :) Savor every last bit of it all!!
oh goodness, you at too funny! Love it.
I had a friend who lived in Germany for 6 months for school, and apparently (as you may know) they don't sell chocolate chips. I guess she once "made" some by chipping bits of chocolate bars, made chocolate chip cookies for her german friends and they went nuts for them!
i'm so jealous!!!
@jenny, you're right! they totally don't sell them. in austria last summer, my friend had to do the same with a chocolate bar. i bought the reese's peanut butter chips (so good) and nestle tollhouse butterscotch chip (which i could eat by the bag).
Hahah this is so wonderful! I remember bringing over big bags of chocolate chips, skittles and m&ms for my friend when I went to Norway. :)
It's always such a novelty to find american goods outside of the USA. I have to admit I spent far more than the usual retail price for some Hershey's chocolate syrup that I found here in the UK. Nothing beats USA junk food!
Going grocery shopping is such a blast. Really, I'm glad you had fun! In Manhattan!
what an awesome night! I LOVE cookie dough :D
This somehow made me really excited, even though all of these are readily available to me. I am so happy you got to eat chocolate chip cookies while watching the Cosby show. Remember the time I met you in London with a bag full of cobblestone cookies and we ate almost the entire bag in its entirety on the hostel bed?
YUMMMMM !! It all looked SSSSOOOOO good. Especially the brownie mix and the pringles. AND of course the cookie dough. Can't get much better than CC Cookies and the Cosby Show!! I wonder why you love all those things? (P.S. I love the sweater you got for Christmas!!)
hey girl hey! first off, love that you're watching bill cosby. that's awesome.
and second, my email is heyeday@gmail.com. so email me! so i can come bother you in europe!
hahaha that picture is so excellent! Chocolate chip cookie dough is sent from heaven.
this just made me love you so much more. if that was even possible. i gasped and smiled when I saw all of that food...the same look i had on at the american import store in scotland..where i bought aunt jemima.
appropriately laughing really hard at this post.
sadly, laughing really hard because the only person who felt the self-inflicted foot wound sentiment more than you(us) was.... james franco. sad truth.
umm kinda way ideal! On another blog I found a post about making cookies within cookies. I almost had a heartattack of pure joy! I feel like I kid waiting for summer and the final bell to ring so I can run to the store and buy my treats!
I find that I miss food I never even really loved before.... I get so excited to see american food that I go a little nuts. I would probably freak out if I got to go to the commissary too! My friend with military connections always says he will hook me up, but so far.... nothing. so needless to say, i am JEALOUS!
omgosh, i just love you! I have also been to Mannheim!! Oh, once you run out of yummy american food, get me your list for your care pack!
looks like a giant care package
it was a care package. to myself. ps i thought you said "look like a giant garbage" (not that that makes sense) and i was sad. though i do realize that yes, there is some truth to that statement.
*looks
Haha, I think that's what my diet mostly consists of. Just kidding (sort of) but seriously, that all looks so good. I LOVE chocolate chip cookie dough. And that does sound like a perfect evening. :)

that's awesome! i would SO shop like that if i had access to some good ole comfort food from the u.s. whilst living in a foreign country.
Oh my, my, my, that looks like quite the stash of goodies you got going on there...are you sharing? hahaha :)
xoxo

First of all, I LOVE LOVE your homepage image. That mountain range is a great background to what looks like an exhilirating hike. (I'm in need of a good hike once the threats of rain subside)
Secondly, there is nothing wrong with keeping a bag of chocolate chips all to yourself. None of us would share ours either.. so might as well keep yours :)
You have a beautiful blog here! I'm so glad I found it.
yum!!! It is funny because when I was studying abroad in France all I wanted was american food.. like a chipotle burrito.. and now I miss everything about the food in France. I guess the grass is always greener when it comes to my food cravings. :)
This is too funny. Love me some cookie dough!
I wish I could try all this American "crap"! It looks and sounds so good.
Oh, and if you go to "Kaufhof", they do have some of that stuff that is in your picture. BUT it's all ridiculously overpriced.
i blacked out after seeing the reese's. total weakness.
Ok, here's the plan. I'll ship you some American goodies, and you ship me some german ones :) or, better yet, I'll ship myself there!
Oh my goodness.. take me here. I got my birthday package from my mom today and it looks similar to the picture above.. but you know primarily gluten-free and organic, haha
