one of my favorite cities on earth is not in europe. nor is it even a city, really. it’s a small town. in the middle of nowhere. its nickname is “cowboy country”. the plains that surround it stretch on for miles and miles, offering its inhabitants one of the most stunning, dusty, orange sunsets you can imagine. it has a population of 40,000. college students make up half of that number. it was once the home of garth brooks. it was once my home, too. actually, it was twice my home. once, when i was born there (i spent the first 2 years of my life there) and again, when i went to college there.
the thing is, i did not want to go to college there. at all. in fact, i think i threw a few fits about it and told my parents i refused. or something to that dramatic effect. i fancied myself too cool, too worldly to live in a small town with ignorant cowboys. i told my parents they were cruel for making me go (don’t i sound like the most pleasant child?). my parents (who went to college there, met there, married there, had all 3 of their children there) told me i’d change my mind.
the first 2 months of my freshman year, i fought and fought and wanted to transfer. the 3rd month, i secretly started to like it but wouldn’t dare tell my parents that. during the 4th month, that ‘like’ became a ‘love’. and by the break for december holidays, i didn’t want to leave.
of all the places i've visited/lived in, stillwater, oklahoma is one of the most unexpectedly magical. don't think i'd ever want to live there again, but the re-visiting is very special. not to mention so fun.
clearly, joel was the happiest of all to see me:

our love for another knows no bounds:

this shirt was my nightgown as a small child, it is a 4T, and this is probably the last time i will be able to fit it over my head:

the best day swimming at the OSU pool with sally:

p.s. how cute is sally’s swimsuit?!
places like these are always the best. i love when people share their fav places and i haven't seen it in a tourist book or in a tropical island calendar.
ps: im totally a big city east coast girl...but i do have a special place in my heart for oklahoma from when i used to be stationed in the military in texas and we would escape to OK on weekends because it was so peaceful and serene. i fell in love with it. and i totally didnt know garth brooks was from stillwater?!
he was born in yukon, ok but he lived their for several years. the house he lived in is 'landmarked'. :)
*lived there
A teenager being dramatic about something? How odd. Love this post, and your PJ shirt. =P
I tagged you in a blog game today...haha
this sounds so awesome! there are just WAYYY too many places to visit in america. it is mindbogglingly crazy!! george and i are thinking of doing a massive road trip around the country in maybeeeeeee three years time, but i already printed out a massive map of the u.s and mapped out a little route. but thinking i now need to add this cowboy country!! x
ah i'm reading the help right now too - it's awesome!
i should have put it more clear...i didnt even realize he was from oklahoma (i guess i didnt know quite where he was from LOL)! :)
i thought it was funny that you had even heard of stillwater!
I was in Stillwater in August, too! (Just for College Days, though). I'm from Southern Oklahoma (Waurika) and am an AVID Sooner fan- but I do always enjoy a weekend trip to Stillwater. (Despite all that bright orange.) ;)
@j: i used to read maps as a kid. creepy i know, but apparently it was good for something (like knowing where stillwater is). haha
I love Stillwater! I went to school there too, and just went back for the first football game! There is just something about driving into town that makes my heart feel happy! - Alyssa
We both share the an affinity for the same small town! I spent my summers outside of Stillwater, and begged my parents to let me go to OSU until I realized how far away the closest Target was. Stilly is my favorite visiting spot during my summers still. I have 100+ cousins (not lying!) whom all live within miles of Stillwater whom I cherish memories with. That small town holds a big place in my heart! I am also an OSU fan by default, my momma went there! <3 the pokes!
Fun! I have such major bang envy man. i love her swimwear!
Stillwater is a magical place!!
Oh girl....you've hit the nail on the head. To this day I refer to Stillwater as the Happiest Place on Earth. Such a magical place---couldn't have asked for a better college experience! Go Pokes! :)

Your outfits in the pictures are very fun. I too fought where I first went to school (Idaho, scholarship there) but ended up loving it. Fun is not an event, it's an attitude, right?
I had a very similar relationship with my college/college town. In fact, I had a transfer application filled out to another school. Then, around the same time you felt it, I fell in love. I feel like Stillwater and College Station are rather similar. To this day, College Station is one of my very favorite places. Hooray for small college towns!
So nice that you've both grown to love your home AND travel all over the world. There is nothing better!!
Ce blog est toujours aussi intéressant! J'ADORE!!!!
Les photos et les looks sont magnifiques!
