when in america, i tend to eat exclusively holiday candy (think reese’s hearts, reese’s pumpkins, reese’s eggs – the peanut butter: chocolate ratio is juuuust right.)
but once i moved to the alps and realized what chocolate is, i discovered the following:
***
it takes me about five minutes to finish a box of these (and this girl can attest to that):

you can find kinder bueno bars at any german/austrian train station vending machine, which means i’ve eaten hundreds of them by now:

milka bars come in loads of different flavors and i think i tried every flavor twice during my semester in salzburg (which probably explains the 20 lbs. i gained during those 6 months):

these ritter bars come in a variety of flavors as well and some are seasonal, which obviously means you have to eat as many as you can as often as you can lest they disappear off the shelves too soon.

this kinder bar is the most generic in taste and therefore the most reminiscent of american chocolate. that being said, if you’re looking for a gateway german-chocolate-drug, this is the one i’d recommend. but do be careful, because before you know it, you’ll be eating these things by the boxful at lunch. especially if they’re sold within walking distance of your school…..

* i know some of these products are available in the united states, but unless it’s a store specializing in international delicacies, i guarantee you the selection just won’t compare.
OMG !!!! I eat ALL of them!!!!
haha- I tried a couple of those while there... and you can't forget the wafers (drawing a blank on what they're called!)
Oh Kinder - you helped me go from a size 6 to 10 while living in Italy. I will never be able to cure that addiction!
Sorry for the 100 comments I made on super old posts today. I got bored, clearly...
PS - I want to try all of these.
@Nikki,
No harm done. I actually don't get email notifications on comments. I'm sort of blogger illiterate sometimes....
yum i loved milka caramel ...i got that every day when i was germany!
mmh, now I am craving chocolate sooo badly!! and the worse is that most of them I cannot get in Australia :(
when i'm in a new country the FIRST food i try is the junk food... has to be done.
Kinder is the best! So thankful we can get it here in Aus! :D Milka is good too. When my family had a German exchange student she gave me some and it was delicious!
now you've made me hungry for chocolate.
ahhh i love kinder chocolates! i love how so many chocolate candies in europe are made with hazelnut... nothing compares!
omg, Kinder. yessssssssssss
I worked at a grocery store for like, a week. Anyway they had a bunch of those Ritter things in the staff room for us to have because they were expired or whatever. Anyway I ate probably ten million of them that week. Good times.
Oh my word, I want candy SO BAD right now!
When I saw Milka Oreo came out this summer, I gave a haughty snort and thought "what a horrid combination and cheap marketing trick for Oreos to get more attention in the European scene."
When I tried one for the first time (and then proceeded to eat the entire bar in about 10 min) I'm pretty sure the first thing I did was call, text, or skype you to see if you had also yet shared in the magical deliciousness.
Damn, now I want a milka oreo bar!
I've never had any of those and I AM a chocolate lover! That's crazy that you aren't a huge fan. I'm the complete opposite I hate the combo of peanut butter and chocolate.
Ich liiiiebe alles von "Kinder Schokolade"!
imagine the other way around...i grew up in germany until i was like 7-8. then i moved to the US and had to 'deal' with american chocolate. aside from dove bars, it can make for a semi-disappointing candy life. hahha. so i totally get this post through and through. luckily norwegian chocolate is the BEST i have ever tasted in this world. i didnt even expect it. only problem is a bar of chocolate costs like $5.
i didnt know milka bars came with oreos in them?? guess im going to have to make a stop into germany soon. i feel like i should have known that... :(
Yay German chocolate! Last year our school had a spirit day during which my fellow teacher and I dressed up as Ritter Sport and Milka chocolate bars. Yum.

I fell in love with Milka here in Spain... we definitely do NOT have the Oreo version however! So jealous, looks delish!
kinder buenos are the best! I got hooked when I was studying in France; sadly the Swedes aren't as excited about them (though you can still find them here). And those milka oreo creations look amazing!
i'm panting. i love all of these and must have eaten my weight in them when i lived in italy. MILKA! be still my heart.
I'm sensing a theme here with the Kinder Schokolade!
That's okay... it's my favorite, too!
I am addicte to buenos--you can never eat too many!
I totally feel you on the chocolate thing! Never ate it at home except for Reeses but here… it's everywhere and I can't stop. I just polished off a bar of the Ritter Sport 50% cocoa bar, so good! My family here is obsessed with Milka, too, so I have adopted the obsession as well.
I'd kill for access to Kinder bars right now! I stocked up before I came home from France, but I'm down to 8 bars ): It's tragic, really.
My. mouth. is. watering. I might have to have Eric take me to World Market tonight to stock up on over-priced delicious chocolate.
this just made me so homesick for Deutschland! Ritter Sport and Milka are tied for the best in my mind...
You and I are kindred spirits when it comes to chocolate. I have tried and LOVE all of these products. Kinder Bueno bars are my life. I once climbed up some shelves at World Market to get a box of them [and boy are they over priced here...worth it though. When I went back to Europe last month, the first thing I did upon arriving in Paris was buy the white chocolate variety from a vending machine in the metro. Yum yum yummmm.
I looooove Milka but it's so hard to come by here in Australia! Kinder Bueno, on the other hand, you can buy by the handful at the grocery stores (yay!).
